I was really excited to
get this CD in the mail because ever since I first heard
their full length, "...and Nothing Is #1",
last year I have really enjoyed just about everything
Up Up Down Down has to offer.
If you are thusfar unfamiliar with Up
Up Down Down, they play a simultaneously laid back and
energetic indie rock drawing from influences like Death
Cab For Cutie. Their latest EP is probably my favorite
thing they have released so far. Every aspect of their
sound has been explored to a deeper degree on this release
in my opinion. They still have the odd-timed, dual guitar
attack where the guitars rarely, if ever, do the same
thing. This is done remarkably and tastefully well.
When the guitars are placed against their dual vocalists
bouncing back and forth, it creates a swirling melodic
feel that I think really makes these guys special.
"Perris,
CA" is also a little heavier than their previous
stuff, with more yelling present on here than on their
last release. Along with that, however, they have thrown
in a cello and violin I believe to make the softer parts
even more soaring. This is a really great and enjoyable
listen and I definitely recommend everyone check this
out ASAP if you're into interesting and creative indie
rock. |
