Two words: CON. TRA. HOO-RAH!

Diagram of how to load film into and use a box camera.

What does Perris, California, a city near Interstate-215 (I know this because I looked it up), have to do with a Contra code and a box camera? I have no idea. I received this EP via “place-with-a-note-reading-‘Jacob-review-this-in-three-days-or-less’-between-storm-door-and-back-door-when-I’m-not-home.” I would not go so far as to call Up Up Down Down Left Right Left Right B A Start, a band from Jersey, emo, or indie, or math-rock, but rather a fusion of the three. One thing about the songs on the Perris, CA EP, is that I have not once, thought they are remarkable songs, had one stuck in my head. The musicianship is excellent and the band shows they really can manipulate a time signature, mostly in the 3/ 4 and 6/ 8 geneses. In fact, they never play in four. If you are looking for variation from that, I suggest this album. One of the notable things about this band is their use of effects, almost always that airy, empty hall, “makesonethink ‘sky’” effect. The first track opens with echoing guitars--one tone-rich, keeping the pulse. It then goes into a Thursday-esque break, which is bitchin’. Oh, that track is called, “Down to the Day.” I. sound. like. a. moron. The next song, “Come Away,” is the most…explosive song on this release. Though nowhere near hard, it is constantly driving toward the third track, “Please Come to me,” which I in no find enjoyable to listen to. The lyrics are sound inspired, but poorly composed:

”Please come to me when I sleep over the sheet
I’ve been helping around our house, out house to be
I can’t sleep under a sheet
I can’t sleep
I can’t be
under a sheet.”

That is the entire song. It is slow and boring and just…it annoys me. You know what’s not annoying? Ten dollars and not owning anything ever written by Bright Eyes. The next song has cool lyrics. The last song, “Them All,” has a string part. Wowwwwwwww. This is a CD that doesn’t get old, but no track that didn’t catch my ear from first listen has since grown on me. Listening to this however, I would be interested in hearing their full-length album. And now, I am thirsty…I’m going to do something’ ‘bout that.
