Review by Andrew Martin

Although this CD is a year old, it was brought to my attention becuase it is getting re-released on OHEV records in a month or so. Up Up Down.. play a compelling style of hugely indie rock that is influenced by the very roots of the genre. Akin to an obvious Sunny Day Real Estate influence, the band takes what SDRE did and adds their own twist: a little spice on the vocals.

Opening with a very unconventional acoustic guitar sound and odd tempo, the reverbed vocals hide behind, almost echoing and hollow in the music. The song only serves as an intro, however, and I Know You'll Find Out That I'm A Geek brings about the band's own style a little more, with a smooth guitar riff and eventual distortion. The vocals are seriously almost identical to much of Sunny Day Real Estate's work, and with the raspy backing vocals behind the soothing mid-range vocals in I Know You'll.., it's obvious these guys are going for that.

My Argument Precedes Me introduces a more "new-school" approach, with a much more upfront, less quiet approach to the vocals and smoothly layered guitars behind them. As Usual reverts back to the more indie, less conventional style of the band, and the band's constant tempo changes and sudden dropoff make the music construction almost that of a jazz song: complex, innovative, and most importantly different.

Up Up Down Down Left Right Left Right A B Start may not have the easiest name to remember, but their name parallels the music on You Landed So Gracefully: non-conventional, complex rock that avoids placing itself in any of today's new-school stereotypes but instead draws its influences from the very roots of today's most popular genres.
