The immeasurable band name stems from the code for endless lives in the Nintendo classic Contra. From this point on we will refer to the band as “Contra” because with limited space, repeating that name more than twice would evaporate my allotted space. “Contra” will draw instant comparisons to bands such as Braid, early Karate, and Corm, especially with the band’s firm commitment to a laid-back, relaxed vibe. It’s actually kind of odd how even when “Contra” are playing more aggressive music, their sound never feels out of character or forced; it’s almost as if the band is trapped in a state of permanent calm. They employ all the characteristics of math rock with time changes, complex rhythms and potent drums. The sporadic moments of acoustic guitar, piano and strings really bind and transform this first full-length into a memorable one. Much like Braid, the vocal style of “Contra” is generally on the warm side but on occasion shows a flare for the more adventurous screamy side. If this record and this band were around in the mid to late 90’s, I think they would get a lot more of the attention they deserve. If you dig bands that combine punk, emo, shoegazer and mathrock, then Up Up Down Down Left Right Left Right B A Start are a noteworthy band to check out.
